A big surprise at the German Film Awards 2011: the film “Vincent will Meer” (Vincent Wants to Sea) and actor Florian David Fitz are the big winners of the most prestigious and most highly endowed award for German films, worth 2.8 million euros. The coveted “Golden Lola” for the best film went to the road movie by director Ralf Huettner at the 61st award ceremony on April 8 in Berlin. The tragicomedy centres on Vincent, who suffers from Tourette’s syndrome. He and two other patients escape from a psychiatric clinic with the aim of reaching the sea in Italy. In 2010 the film had an extremely successful run in German cinemas. With a total audience of around one million filmgoers it was the second most popular German production launched last year.
The film’s double Lola triumph was perfected by Florian David Fitz: the 36-year-old actor from Munich received the award for best leading male role. Fitz, who was also involved as screenwriter in “Vincent will Meer”, won against acting colleagues August Diehl (“Wer wenn nicht wir” / “If Not Us, Who”) and Alexander Fehling (“Goethe”). The other German Film Award winners in a total of 16 categories included Tom Tykwer (best director for the film “Drei” / “Three”), Sophie Rois (best leading female role in the film “Drei”) and Wim Wenders (best documentary film for “Pina”).
Up to now, Lola-winner Florian David Fitz was one of the less well-known young German actors. Starting in 2000 he played in a variety of German TV films and series. He has gained increased public attention as the arrogant senior physician Marc Meier in the series “Doctor’s Diary”. In 2006 he received the distinguished Adolf Grimme Prize for the TV film “Meine verrückte türkische Hochzeit” (My Crazy Turkish Wedding). Finally, in November 2010, he received the Bambi Media Award in the category “best national actor”. Now, the German Film Award 2011 marks a new climax in his career. Fitz, who is generally regarded as a down-to-earth guy rather than a reveller in the film world’s glitz and glamour, is currently working on his next project. As screenwriter and director he is now filming the novel “Jesus liebt mich” (Jesus Loves Me) by bestselling author David Safier.
